Release or Retain a Public IP
This guide explains how Public IP addresses behave when a resource is removed, and how to release or retain a Public IP in CloudRaya.
Understanding this behavior helps you:
- Avoid unnecessary charges
- Preserve IP addresses for reuse
- Manage Public IP quota efficiently
What Happens to a Public IP?
A Public IP in CloudRaya is a separate network resource.
This means:
- Public IPs are not automatically deleted when a VM or resource is removed
- Public IP lifecycle is independent from the resource lifecycle
When a resource is deleted, the Public IP may be retained or released, depending on your action.
Retain vs Release: Whatβs the Difference?
Retain a Public IP
When you retain a Public IP:
- The IP is detached from the resource
- The IP remains in your Public IP list
- The IP can be:
- Reattached to another VM or Load Balancer
- Reused to preserve DNS mappings
- The IP continues to count toward your quota
- The IP continues to be billed
This is useful when you want to keep a stable IP address.
Release a Public IP
When you release a Public IP:
- The IP is permanently removed
- The IP is returned to the CloudRaya pool
- Billing for that IP stops immediately
- The IP cannot be recovered
Use this option when the IP is no longer needed.
Retaining a Public IP When Deleting a Virtual Machine
When deleting a VM that has a Public IP attached:
- Open VM Detail
- Click Delete VM
- Review the confirmation dialog
- Choose whether to:
- Retain Public IP, or
- Release Public IP
- Confirm the deletion
If You Retain the IP
-
The VM is deleted
-
The Public IP remains available
-
The IP appears in:
Dashboard β Network β Public IP Address
-
The instance field will be empty
You can reuse this IP later.
π See: Use an Existing Public IP
If You Release the IP
- The VM is deleted
- The Public IP is deleted permanently
- The IP is removed from the Public IP list
- Billing stops for that IP
Releasing an Unused Public IP Manually
You can also release a Public IP that is not attached to any resource.
Steps:
- Open Dashboard β Network β Public IP Address
- Locate an unused Public IP
- Click Delete
- Confirm the action
This immediately frees quota and stops billing.
Billing and Quota Implications
Important behavior to note:
- Retained Public IPs:
- Continue to consume quota
- Continue to incur charges
- Released Public IPs:
- Free up quota immediately
- Stop billing immediately
If you reach the Public IP limit:
- You must release unused IPs before acquiring new ones
π See: Public IP Limits
Common Use Cases
When to Retain a Public IP
- Preserving DNS records
- Migrating workloads
- Replacing a VM without changing IP
- Temporarily removing a resource
When to Release a Public IP
- Resource is permanently removed
- No future reuse is planned
- You want to reduce cost
- You need to free quota
Important Notes
- A retained Public IP is not attached to any resource
- Retained IPs remain visible in the Public IP list
- Public IPs cannot be moved across Cloud Zones
- Once released, a Public IP cannot be restored
Summary
- Public IPs are independent resources
- Deleting a VM does not automatically delete its Public IP
- You must choose to:
- Retain the IP for reuse, or
- Release the IP to stop billing
- Proper IP management prevents quota and billing issues
